Roberts Petroleum Torpedo Company 1865 stock This is a spectacular stock from the Roberts Petroleum Torpedo Company. Issued 1865, uncancelled, good condition (a couple of minor small holes). A very scarce certificate from an extremely important company. Two vignettes: an oil well and a ‘torpedo’ exploding at depth in a well. The Roberts torpedo had a dramatic impact in increasing oil production in 1865 and thereafter. Oil wells would become clogged with paraffin soon after beginning production and Col. E.A.L. Roberts had the idea to explode a naval torpedo at the bottom of the well in order to fracture the rock and clean out debris. It proved very successful. Price=$550.
